There’s good news for east Warrington motorists, with the Birchwood Way westbound closure set to be removed early.

The route – part of the £10.8m Warrington East Phase 2 project –  is due to be re-opened three weeks earlier than anticipated, on Monday 26 November, in advance of the peak traffic period that morning.

The closure has been in place since August to enable the major works – which will reduce congestion and improve road safety along the Birchwood Way corridor – to be undertaken.

Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for highways, transportation and public realm, Cllr Hans Mundry, said:  “The Warrington East phase 2 project is making good progress, and I’m delighted that this route is re-opening ahead of schedule.

“It’s great news for the residents of the east of the borough and regular commuters to Birchwood Park, particularly in the run up to Christmas.”

Warrington East phase 2  – which follows the success of the Birchwood Pinchpoint (phase 1) – aims to improve traffic flow in east Warrington, focusing on improvements at the key junctions of Blackbrook Avenue roundabout, College Place roundabout and Oakwood Gate roundabout.

Scheduled to complete in December 2019, the project will also provide better pedestrian and cycling facilities; and improve network reliability, supporting the Birchwood Enterprise Zone and Birchwood Park, and improving access to employment and commercial sites.

Balfour Beatty are delivering the works through the Scape Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Framework.
